Role as head of IT business services comes with remit to ensure department’s transformation is ‘business-led’

HM Revenue and Customs has created a senior leadership position dedicated to ensuring its technology transformation work supports – and is supported by – the department’s senior leadership and wider workforce.
The role as head of IT business services will sit within HMRC’s Customer Services Group (CSG) and offers a yearly salary of up to £100,000.
The newly created position comes with a remit to serve as “the face of IT on business senior leadership teams”. The postholder will be tasked with “establishing and maintaining excellent relationships with the senior business executive management to ensure technology change is business-led”.
The head of IT business services will work the CSG’s leadership team to develop “a business and technology strategy” geared to the needs of HMRC’s employees.

This will include overseeing all related procurement activity, as well as supporting the department’s ongoing large-scale move towards cloud environments.
The position is described by HMRC as sitting “at the intersection of strategy, technology, delivery and stakeholder management”. The postholder’s ultimate objective will be “to deliver business centred digital transformation at pace”.
The department is seeking applicants with a wide range of technical expertise and leadership experience.
In her foreword to the candidate pack, the CSG chief information officer Sarah McMann – to whom the head of IT business services will report – said that she is “looking for a transformational leader to partner the business and lead our ambitious transformation agenda”.
“I want to work with passionate, energetic people who are up for the challenge of delivering transformation on a huge scale, and who already have real hands-on experience of driving through digital change” she added. “We need inspirational leaders to take people on this journey. You will be using your deep technology, strategy and leadership experience to build and run cutting-edge digital services used across HMRC. If you are passionate about how technology can improve customer and employee experience, and you are eager to deliver excellent service fast, this will be a thoroughly rewarding role.”
The chosen candidate can base themselves at any of HMRC’s offices in Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool, Shipley, Telford, Bristol, and Worthing. Wherever they operate from, “UK wide travel will be an essential part of the role”, the department said.
