Systems provider Civica has won a seven-year contract to provide IT services for the Coroner’s Office in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The firm said a new partnership with Hull City Council would deliver a more integrated way of working for services provided by the Coroner’s Office, allowing it to offer higher-quality care to bereaved families.

The new system will allow doctors to electronically submit death reports into the coroner’s system in real-time, rather than phoning-in details. 

Civica said the new system automated the production of documents and forms, eliminated the risk of inaccuracies, and allowed for 24-hour reporting. It added that the package also allowed managers to analyse data, monitor workloads and produce more detailed management reports reflecting performance statistics.

Jillian Fill, registration and coroner’s support service manager at Hull City Council, said the authority was under pressure to improve cost-efficiencies and move towards a paperless working environment, but still needed to deal with the most sensitive of issues.

“As we’d already been working with Civica in other areas of the local authority we had no doubt that they’d be the right partner,” she said.

“They understood our needs and aspirations from the start and delivered a solution that will not only impact our office but will also positively impact the whole community.”

Last year, Hull picked Civica to take over the running of its revenues and benefits service in a seven-year deal said at the time to be worth £40m.

Civica said the coroner’s contract had been timed to coincide with the revenues and benefits deal but was separate from it. 

A spokeswoman said the company was unable to disclose the value of the coroner’s deal. 

Civica said it had recently won new contracts for coroners’ services in North Manchester, Birmingham and Solihull and the Black Country, among others.
