Sheffield seeks leader to ‘deliver one of the boldest and most forward-thinking digital transformations in local government’

Local authority in South Yorkshire invites applications for top tech managerial post to lead rollout of digital strategy, as well as advertising two other senior roles focused on customer experiences

Sheffield City Council is seeking a digital leader to spearhead a transformation programme the authority describes as “one of the boldest and most forward-thinking” in the local government sector.

The council is currently recruiting for a director of ICT and digital innovation. The job advert states that the post comes with a remit to “steer the delivery of [a] city-wide digital strategy” which covers the period from 2024 to 2028.

Also on the list of duties are the day-to-day duties of leading “an essential corporate function that touches everything: from customer experience to AI-powered service delivery; from cybersecurity to digital inclusion; from cloud platforms to community empowerment”.

The post comes with the additional responsibility of serving as “the council’s senior information risk owner, playing a critical role in protecting our digital estate, ensuring resilience, and enabling safe adoption of emerging technology”.

The advert adds: “This is a high-impact, highly visible role…. you will need to bring strong digital leadership, strategic clarity and a deep understanding of how to build people-centred digital services. We are not looking for someone to just ‘keep the lights on’. We are looking for a transformational leader who can build future-ready digital infrastructure, champion data-informed decision-making, and embed innovation at the heart of our services. And you will help us make sure the whole city benefits from our ambitious digital agenda.”

The successful candidate will reporting to Sheffield’s chief operating officer and will earn a “competitive” salary. Applications are open until midnight on Sunday 22 June, and the council has retained public sector executive recruitment outfit Tile Hill to support the hiring process.

Also up for grabs are two other positions expected to play a key role in Sheffield’s transformation agenda: head of customer operations; and head of customer experience.

The former post will come with a remit to manage “a new ‘Customer Hub’ that will reimagine how people engage with the council, across digital, phone and face-to-face channels”.

The chosen applicant for the latter role, meanwhile, will “drive the development of our newly created ‘Customer Experience Capability’, a council-wide function focused on journey design, customer insight, performance data and customer intelligence”.

These two posts are both open for applications until midnight on Sunday 15 June.

With over 550,000 citizens, Sheffield City Council serves one of the biggest populations of any local authority in the country.
