London borough seeks leader to create ‘roadmap’ for tech future
Lambeth Council in London is seeking a senior leader to spearhead a transformation process through which it hopes “to become a digital, customer-focused centre of excellence”.
As part of a revamp of its senior management structure, the central London borough is advertising the vacant position of director of residents’ experience and digital.
According to a job specification posted on the website of recruitment firm McLean Partnership, the role comes with a remit to “act as chief digital officer for Lambeth”. This will include inculcating innovation in both the council’s external engagements – with suppliers and citizens – as well as in its internal processes, such as use of data.
The postholder will also be expected to “develop and deliver Lambeth’s digital, ICT and customer access strategy, including [a] digital roadmap”.

Boosting the tech skills of the authority’s wider workforce will also form part of the position’s brief, as will ensuring that there are “range of appropriate access methods and points of access” for citizens using council services. This should be done in a way which “promotes independence and self-service”, according to the job spec.
“Our purpose is to consistently deliver and improve on the excellent services we provide,” the council said. “Taking a design-led approach, working in an agile way [the chosen candidate will] lead the design and improvement of customer centred services across Lambeth, enabling them with fit-for-purpose technology and data.”
It added: “The ambition for the division is for it to truly reflect what we do. In many instances to be the ‘visible face of the council’, along with core services that enable the organisation to be innovative, improve residents’ experiences, and function better as an organisation. Over the next six months [they will] lead this transition to enable this ambition.”
A salary for the role is not specified, but Lambeth said that compensation will be commensurate with band one of its Hay pay-grade structure. Previously published data on salaries for senior officers suggests this will equate to between £105,000 and £115,000 per annum.
