Borough council advertises senior-management post with remit to drive online services and smart working

Stevenage Borough Council is seeking a senior leader to drive digital transformation of citizen services and new ways of working for the authority’s staff.
The council is advertising a vacant position as assistant director – digital and transformation. The role that comes with an annual pay packet of up to £75,370, plus a potential relocation allowance of as much as £8,000.
The chosen candidate will head up the authority’s Connected to Our Customers initiative, which aims to grow the number of services that are available digitally, as well improving service levels and increasing customer satisfaction. Stevenage claims to have already invested upwards of £2m in improving its digital offering, and “further transformation and enhancement” is planned for the months and years ahead.

he Connected to our Customers programme is just one of five strands of the authority’s Future Town, Future Council plan for the town. Also part of the plan is a town-centre regeneration that includes the establishment of a “public sector hub” that will co-locate council offices with a library and a health centre.
The digital director will be asked to help “transform our ways of working across the organisation in readiness for our new public sector hub”, the council said.
“We are proud of our achievements to date and – importantly – are on a firm financial footing. Significantly, we have retained the majority of our 100-plus services in-house and pride ourselves for delivering in relation to service quality and cost,” it added.
“There couldn’t be a better time for you to join us. You will lead cross-cutting teams and become a key member of our senior leadership team.”
Stevenage is seeking applicants with “an impressive track record in delivering digital transformation”.
Applications are open until Monday, shortly after which the council will conduct telephone interviews with the leading candidates. A day-long assessment and interview process is scheduled for Monday 5 November.
Located in Hertfordshire about 30 miles to the north of London, in 1946 Stevenage was designated as the first of the UK’s post-war “new towns”. The first residents moved into newly built homes in 1952 and, since then, the town’s population has grown to its current total of almost 90,000.
