Newcastle University to issue digital degree certificates

Institution signs £150,000 contract for electronic issuance of various academic documents

Freshers enrolling at Newcastle University this autumn will receive their degree documentation in digital form.

A newly published contract-award notice published by the university reveals that Dublin-based electronic document specialist Digitary has won a £150,000 deal “to provide secure and verified student documents electronically”.

The university said: “The documents will include the degree parchment, academic transcript and the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR) in the first instance, but it is anticipated that this could grow to include further documents in the future.”

The university’s engagement with Digitary kicked off in June, and runs until the end of 2021.

Newcastle University becomes the latest in a long line of UK institutions to become a Digitary customer, with existing clients including the Universities of Cambridge, Manchester, Derby, and Sheffield, as well as Liverpool John Moores University and De Montfort University in Leicester. The company claims its technology can help create cost savings and other efficiencies, as well as combatting fraud.
