MoJ seeks £100k leader to ‘transform how the department manages its information’

Department is advertising a vacant post at deputy director level with a remit to make increased use of digital and tech in the name of ‘addressing systemic information management challenges’

The Ministry of Justice is seeking to recruit a senior manager to spearhead efforts to “transform how the department manages its information”.

The role of deputy director, information transformation sits at the head of a team of 170 people and offers an annual salary of up to £100,000. The postholder will oversee work in five defined areas of the MoJ’s operations: Offender Information Access & Registry; Digital Records Management team; Records Management Service; Library and Disclosure Team; and the Covid-19 Inquiry response team.

The position comes with a remit to “prioritise addressing systemic information management challenges, with a strong focus on accelerating the identification and deployment of technology and digital tools to enhance the security and efficiency of information management”.

The chosen applicant “will retain the responsibilities of information and records access and compliance but will deliver this using modern tools and techniques and reprioritise the resource to focus on digital transformation and innovation”, according to the job advert.

“You will focus on identifying and implementing innovative solutions aimed at transforming services, boosting productivity, and automating processes to protect the Ministry of Justice’s sensitive information,” the advert adds.

The deputy director will be expected to “provide direct advice and recommendations” to the MoJ’s most senior leaders, including top officials and ministers, as well as the ministry’s Audit and Risk Committee.

The chosen candidate will also be required to work closely with colleagues in roles including the department’s directors of AI, transformation, digital, and technology with the expectation to “foster closer interdepartmental cooperation”.

A key area of focus will be the MoJ’s team dedicated to the Covid-19 Inquiry, which will be led by the new appointment.

“Aligning the Covid-19 Inquiry team with the broader MoJ information management team will facilitate better alignment and the routine sharing of best practices,” the advert says. “Due to nature of the role, the role holder will also be required to work out of hours from time to time to ensure senior leadership from the Security and Information Directorate is available in case of an incident.”

Applications are open until 11.55pm on 6 April.
