Chi Onwurah signs up for Socitm 2016 Spring conference

Chi Onwurah, shadow minister for culture and the digital economy, has signed up to speak at Socitm’s Spring conference.

The MP will speak at a panel session with the theme of ‘women in ICT’ during the one-day event which will take place in London in April.

She will be joined as a speaker at the conference by Paul Brewer, director for digital and resources at Adur and Worthing Councils, who will take part in a session discussing open systems in the public sector.

A statement from Socitm, the representative body for public sector ICT workers, said: “This year’s event will focus on building the business case for service redesign, allowing our audience to develop their understanding of the policies and working practices that underpin successful transformation.”

Another session will cover what current business models are enabling innovative, cost-effective working and how councils can make better use of public-private funding.

The Spring conference will also comprise Socitm’s annual general meeting, when a new president is expected to be confirmed.

Last year, Nadira Hussain, One Oracle programme manager at oneSource, the shared service created by London boroughs of Newham and Havering, was elected to the post with a mission to increase the profile of women within public sector ICT.

Onwurah has a degree in electrical engineering from Imperial College in London and worked in hardware and software development before becoming head of telecoms Technology at watchdog Ofcom, with a focus on broadband provision.
