Home Office awards £8m biometrics deal to Mastek

Indian tech services firm adds application development contract to the £5m DevOps and support deal it won earlier this year

The Home Office has awarded another multimillion-pound contract as part of its ongoing biometrics transformation work, with Mastek swiping an £8m deal to provide application development services.

According to a contract notice issued earlier this year, the engagement will cover work to develop applications that supports the “DNA solution, Biometric Services (API) Gateway, access portal, and mobile solutions” of the government’s biometrics programme. The two-year contract will see the Mumbai-based firm provide development and testing services across a range of technologies, including Java, JBoss Fuse, WebServices, and Postgres.

Mastek will use agile methods to develop and support applications to be used by the police, immigration authorities, the Border Force, and HM Passport Office. The firm will be expected to provide up to 30 people to the Home Office’s Croydon site, and a further 11 to 14 developers to the department’s Birmingham office.

The application development deal, the worth of which is estimated as £8m, is the second major Home Office biometrics contract won by Mastek this year. In April, the company was awarded a £5m two-year contract to design, build, and support the underlying platform that will support the delivery of applications it has now been tasked with helping to develop.

The Home Office is in the midst of some major investments in the future of its biometric programmes, including a £300m project to bring its law-enforcement and immigration databases under a single service-management structure. The department is also undertaking a £55m programme of work to build a new biometrics-matching system.

Prahlad Koti, managing director of Mastek UK, said: “Mastek has formed a strong relationship with the Home Office since we started working with them five years ago. We recognise the strategic importance of the HOB (Home Office Biometrics) programme requirements and look forward to using our expertise in helping the Home Office protect borders and communities.”

In addition to seven locations in its home country, Mastek also runs UK offices in Reading and Leeds, as well as a North American base in Dallas. In its most recent set of annual results the technology consultancy posted turnover of £90m.
