An online government service for paying fines related to car tax and insurance is now fully live.

Since September 2017, the ‘Pay a DVLA fine’ service for paying penalties issued by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has been in public beta mode. But, having met all of the 18 service standards, the tool has been granted live status.

During the six months it has already been in operation, the service has also been expanded to include new fines and to tie in more closely with the platform through which drivers can pay tax on their vehicles.

“Customers can pay all major fine types digitally,” the DVLA said. “Once a customer pays their fine, the service updates immediately, closes down the enforcement case, and links directly into our ‘Tax your vehicle’ service. Customers can also request an email receipt.”

Since the beta service was first opened to the public, a total of £1.8m in fines have been collected. Some 46% of payments were made outside of office hours, with 45% of transactions conducted on a tablet or smartphone.

The DVLA said that it is also now receiving fewer calls to its contact centre, with 70% of people preferring to use the digital service.

The service allows users to pay fines for not having insured or taxed their vehicle, and for failing to declare that it is off the road. The digital platform also offers users the chance to pay any tax still owed.
