Department signals intent to make better use of data as role as head of nascent team is advertised

The Department for Transport has created a team that will dedicate itself to using data generated across the transport sector “to make journeys simpler, faster, and more reliable”.
A salary of up to about £71,000 is being offered in the DfT’s search for “an experienced data professional” to lead the four-strong team, which will also contain two strategic data managers, and one data executive. Collectively they will be known as the Developing Data Unit.

The department said: “[The successful candidate will] champion the availability and use of open data across the transport sector – identifying with stakeholders where it can have greatest real-world impact – and then lead and support projects to unlock these data assets for use in data service solutions, working with digital colleagues to facilitate consistent standards and architecture.”
The Developing Data Unit will be tasked with demonstrating the benefits of data standards and open data. They will also be given a remit to inculcate data governance and ethics across the department. The team will also work closely with similar units dedicated to data architecture and data science, as well as more generalist statistics and policy teams.
The job is based at the DfT’s headquarters in London, and applications are open until 11 June.
