GDS seeks £90k deputy director to act as ‘ultimate escalation point’ for customers

Organisation seeks technology operations leader

The Government Digital Service is offering a £90,000 salary for a new deputy director of technology operations.

The role comes with a remit to make sure “that the level of consistency of tools and processes is appropriate for the efficient operation and support of all GDS products and services”. The successful applicant, who will report into the director of portfolio, will directly manage a team of four people and have oversight of a total of 30-40 staff.

The deputy director of technology operations will also be asked to act as “the interface between GDS and its customers in relation to technical operations, including being the ultimate escalation point” for problems or questions.

The job offers a fixed-term two-year contract or, for existing civil servants, a two-year “loan” agreement with their current employer. The role will be based at GDS headquarters in Whitechapel in London.

Applicants have until 16 October to apply, after which GDS will undertake a five-stage recruitment process, consisting of the creation of first a longlist, then a shortlist, followed by an individual leadership assessment, a staff-engagement exercise, and, finally, interviews, which will take place during the last week of November.

The post is one of three deputy director-level jobs currently up for grabs within GDS’s Delivery and Support Group. Earlier this month the organisation advertised two £100,000 posts, as deputy directors of portfolio delivery, and of product and proposition.
