Defence Equipment and Support, a trading entity of the Ministry of Defence, is recruiting for a chief information officer to develop IT strategy and make better use of emerging technologies.

The role is offered at £130,000, putting it on a par with recent recruitment drives for a platforms director at the Home Office and a director of IT delivery at HMRC.

According to the job advert, the CIO will be responsible for the development of an IT strategy and ensuring the body’s business strategy is met through better use of ICT.

This will include using data as an asset, digital innovation and encouraging change and transformation in the department.

Defence Equipment and Support is an MoD arms length body that manages complex projects to buy and support the equipment and services for the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force, and the new recruit will need to build relationships with industry as well as in the public sector. 

The MoD said that they should also provide a strong understanding of new technologies, platforms and digital opportunities, and have an eye for emerging technologies and how the body could make best use of them.

They should have a track record of establishing a digital workforce strategy and improving productivity by ensuring staff have the right tools for the job, and need experience in related, industry-leading teams.

In addition, they must be able to demonstrate that they can manage a capital expenditure budget for IT and that they can work within governance processes and make use of performance metrics.

The deadline for applications is 11 January.
