Haringey set to join merged ICT service

A third council in north London council is set to join a shared digital and ICT service established last year.

In September, Camden and Islington councils voted to merge their ICT departments in order to save money and improve services.

And now it has emerged that London Borough of Haringey could also join the partnership, in a move that could save an additional £2m.Camden Council cabinet member for finance and technology,

Theo Blackwell, said: “We already have a long history of successful collaboration with Islington and all three authorities share similar objectives, so it makes perfect sense to come together.

“A great deal of work has already gone into creating the shared service, and we’re delighted that Haringey has recognised the potential for significantly improving service whilst delivering the budget reductions needed as a result of government cuts.”

He said that the joint service was exploring the generation of income for all three councils by selling services to other councils.

Savings from the original partnership were estimated at £4m a year, a figure which has now risen to £6m across the three councils. £3.4m of that will come from staff costs, while the price of implementation is estimated at £2.5m per council.

A joint committee from all three councils would meet to guide the service, with a single officer appointed to run it, with a recruitment drive set to begin in the late Spring.

The service is pencilled in for a launch on 1 October with all three councils set to discuss Haringey’s membership in coming weeks.
