South Tyneside offers £95k for digital and IT chief to take transformation to next stage


Local authority covering towns to the east of Newcastle upon Tyne is seeking to appoint someone with a ‘track record of managing and achieving positive change in a large organisation’

South Tyneside Council is offering a near-six-figure salary for a new technology leader to oversee “the next exciting phase of the council’s transformation programme”.

The role as head of digital and ICT comes with a remit to manage the authority’s online services, as well as its estate of hardware and software. The postholder will also be responsible for leading cybersecurity operations and ensuring regulatory compliance.

The successful candidate will report to South Tyneside’s director of business and resources and will be expected to “work collaboratively with internal teams, external partners, customers and political leadership to drive digital transformation”. An annual salary of £95,510 is on offer.

The job advert adds: “This is a pivotal time for positive change in South Tyneside. As we embark on the next exciting phase of the council’s transformation programme, we’re looking for someone who can act as a key officer within the programme. Someone who can offer strategic challenge on performance, strengthen data management and analytics and drive the change agenda through championing the benefits of digital and ICT.”

Once in post, the chosen applicant will be tasked with reviewing the authority’s digitisation work to data and then assessing “how we can make the best use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and automation in a local government context”.

The council is keen to appoint a “strategic thinker who has a successful and proven track record of managing and achieving positive change in a large organisation”.

Prospective applicants are further advised that “people skills will be key” as the position will require the cultivation of “strong relationships at all levels, from frontline staff to elected members and external partners”.

The advert adds: “We’re looking for an innovative and forward-thinking individual who can develop and implement the Council’s new Digital and ICT strategy, providing advice and guidance on service improvements for residents and realising efficiencies through new ways of working so that South Tyneside becomes a truly modern, fit-for-purpose council.”

The authority represents a metropolitan borough to the east of Newcastle upon Tyne. The area served by the council contains all or part of the towns of South Shields, Jarrow and Hebburn, and the villages that make up the Boldons. South Tyneside Council provides services to almost 150,000 citizens.
