Central technology unit opens recruitment for two ‘lead technologists’ roles offering an annual pay pack of up to £85,600 and a remit to help set strategy across the public sector
Government’s Central Digital and Data Office is seeking to appoint a duo of artificial intelligence experts to help set strategy and support effective adoption of the technology across the public sector.
The Cabinet Office-based unit is currently recruiting for two lead technologist positions focused on AI. The positions will sit within the CDDO’s 40-person chief technology officer function – the work of which is split across four areas of focus: AI; DevOps; platforms; and colleague experience.
The successful candidates will have the opportunity to work with hundreds of departments and organisations across the breadth of the public sector, with the ultimate objective of “helping your colleagues… use [AI] technology as effectively, and as safely, as possible”.

Key responsibilities including supporting research intended to “shape a 10-year intent and strategy” for the use of AI, as well as helping to establish “principles, standards and best practice”.
The postholders will also “work with vendors to maximise their offer to UK public sector, and with Crown Commercial Service in commercial engagements with vendors” and to “build a network of peers across UK public sector to regularly engage with”.
Closer to home, the pair of AI experts will be expected to “help upskill others in CDDO and Cabinet Office in your specialist area”, according to the job advert.
“Artificial Intelligence has the potential to transform how the public sector uses technology and how it delivers services to citizens,” it added.
The roles will be based in Bristol, London or Manchester and sit at civil service grade 7, offering a salary in the region of £53,400 or £75,328 – or £58,800 to £85,600 for those based in the capital.
