Department says that ‘profile of criminality is changing rapidly’

A Home Office team dedicated to investigating immigration crimes is seeking to recruit a collection of digital forensics professionals.
A total of four positions are up grabs. The additional capacity needed because the “profile of criminality is changing rapidly with an ever increasing reliance on digital technology”, according to the job advert.
The successful candidates will join the Criminal and Financial Investigation (CFI) team sits within the Home Office’s Immigration Enforcement operations. In their role as digital forensics practitioners, the new recruits will be tasked with “analysing and reporting data from mobile devices and peripheral items such as pen drives, memory cards and SatNavs… analysing data from laptop/computers using proprietary and bespoke triage software; [and] processing the recovered data into a form suitable for investigations to examine for evidential content”.

“This is an exciting opportunity to join our CFI team as a DF specialist and help to develop our understanding of immigration crime,” the advert added. “The role will be working in a newly created unit with responsibility for analysing data from digital devices using ‘off the shelf’ tools and reporting software, providing professional products to case teams to assist in complex investigations. This is a new and challenging and role at the heart of the recently formed Cyber and Digital Capabilities Unit.”
The CFI is comprised of immigration officers, “supported by a small number of police officers”. The team also works closely with bodies such as the National Crime Agency and the National Police Chiefs Council.
Applications for the posts are open until 11.55pm on Thursday 16 March. The roles come with an annual salary of between £25,750 and £27,650.
