Department looks for trio of experts to join specialist team

The Home Office is seeking to recruit a crew of software developers to help support ambitious objectives to increase the use of automation and digital services.
The department is advertising three vacant positions for developers to join a specialist team dedicated to the “technical design and implementation of process automations and APIs” in the organisation’s digital services and operations.
The successful applicants will join a small team, comprised of various digital, data and technology roles and other disciplines, including test engineers and user researchers, as well as advisors focused on the ethical impacts of artificial intelligence.
“At Home Office, we have daring targets to reduce reliance on manual business processes and transition to digital delivery of many of our services,” the job advert said. “We have many truly exciting initiatives coming together which are reshaping how we deliver digital services now and in the future.”

It added: “Version control, secure coding, testing and how to improve your automated delivery pipeline will be at the forefront of your mind.”
The roles will be based in Manchester or Sheffield and offer an annual salary of between £39,000 and £42,900. An extra £8,300 could be offered to “candidates with exceptional skills and experience”.
The roles will require experience of building tools using low-code methods and technology such as UiPath and Microsoft Power Automate. Applicants should also possess expertise in APIs, web technologies, and cloud environments – including Azure and Amazon Web Services.
Prospective candidates are advised that the department recognises that its technology estate includes “many vendors and technologies and we understand that there could be gaps in your knowledge and experience; we truly believe in continuous professional development so, to support you, we will give you the training, resources, and time to keep yourself up to date”.
“The developers work on software components that form part of a product,” the advert said. “You will be involved in designing, running and improving software that meets user needs. You will typically work under the guidance of senior colleagues in your team. You will work to our technical standards writing clean, secure code following a test-driven approach, ensuring the code is open as far as possible and can be re-used.”
