EU proposes police access to e-mail, phone calls & SMS

The Council of the European Union is proposing under a draft framework decision that phone companies, mobile companies and internet service providers are to store all information on the people EU citizens called or phoned and places from which those comunications were made for a period of at least one year.

The proposal is a tactic in the fight against terrorism. It needs telcos to keep data allowing official bodies to establish source, destination, routing, time, date, location and duration of communications. Strong stuff.

Attendees of the EU Council meeting also adopted other tactics in the fight against terrorism. This included a revised action plan on combatting terrorism, a strategy on terrorist financing, a report on intelligence capacity, conclusions on prevention, preparedness and response to terrorist attacks and an EU solidarity programme on the consequences of terrorist threats and attacks.
