Has the Public Sector Got a Grip on Cyber-Resilience?

The Government Cyber Security Strategy, published last year, set out a range of plans and programmes intended to ensure that the public sector is as protected as possible against all recognised threats.

With 79 mentions throughout the document – including two in the first 25 words – it is clear that ‘resilience’ is at the heart of this ambition.

The concept of cyber resilience – which encompasses not just defensive measures, but detection and mitigation of attacks, as well as increased awareness and best practice across the workforce – may require a change in mindset for some. It can be difficult for those outside the IT security profession, particularly senior managers and elected members, to fully understand and accept the near inevitability of breaches, and the need to expand and reimagine organisational cyber approaches accordingly.

But important work is already taking place across the public sector to support such approaches.

The new GovAssure regime requires Whitehall departments to undergo yearly independent cyber resilience audits, and address issues and possible improvements identified during the process.

Meanwhile, local police forces are leading a network of nine Cyber Resilience Centres that cover the whole of England, Scotland, and Wales, and work to build skills, instil good security practices and culture, and help public and commercial bodies respond to attacks.

This webinar event, hosted by PublicTechnology and Rubrik, will bring together a panel of experts to discuss the importance of cyber resilience, the extent to which the public sector currently understands and embodies the concept, and how to improve organisations’ security posture.

Areas for discussion will include:

  • Does ‘cyber resilience’ require a different mindset to ‘cyber security’ – and how can this change be supported?
  • Ensuring a cyber-aware and resilient workforce: from senior managers to front-line colleagues
  • How do technology and technical controls support resilience?
  • Best practice for responding to successful attacks
  • How to ensure continuous improvement of cyber resilience
