New Scottish information commissioner to be appointed
A motion to appoint lawyer Daren Fitzhenry is to be put before the Scottish Parliament
Daren Fitzhenry is to be proposed as the new Scottish information commissioner.
A motion to agree the nomination will be considered by the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday 27 June, after which the appointmentmust be approved by the Queen.
A law graduate of the University of Glasgow, he worked as a solicitor before joining the RAF in 2000.
He has experience in the development, implementation and application of legislation and his legal practice has included the application of the Freedom of Information Act.
The information commissioner’s role is to promote and enforce freedom of information legislation in the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 and the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations 2004.
Fitzhenry will succeed Rosemary Agnew who held the position until April 2017.
The appointment to the St Andrews-based role follows an open recruitment process and is for a fixed term of six years, with a salary of £73,000.is currently a senior legal officer in the RAF legal branch, heading up its legal advisory team.
