As part of a wider ambition to help increase data skills and enable people to better engage with information, the government body is providing classroom activities based on formal statistics
The Office for National Statistics has prepared a range of lesson plans to enable AS- and A-Level students to work with real statistical data.
The agency has released a set of five freely available “toolkits”, developed in conjunction with the Association of Colleges. Using official data collected by the ONS, each of the kits offers lesson plans and projects ideas for teachers working with students in one or more of four subject areas: mathematics; geography; sociology; and business.
The five kits cover statistics related to: the gender pay gap; inflation; the census; health and wellbeing; and business, industry and trade.
Among the materials included are projects allowing pupils study data to understand how inflation rates are calculated and the subsequent impact on industry and consumers, as well as government’s policy response. The health and census toolkits, meanwhile, will enable learners to analyse trends and differentiation between regions and change over time.

National statistician professor Sir Ian Diamond said: “We need to do all we can to help young people gain a good understanding of how to use and read data. Not only will it help them make better-informed decisions, but it’s also a great way to boost STEM skills that are so vital to our country’s economic growth. As the head of an organisation that relies on a highly skilled workforce, I’m only too aware of how important it is to maintain a talent pipeline. Further education institutions play a vital role in addressing STEM shortages, so we’re very keen to help them find new ways of bringing these subjects to life and showing students how relevant they are to everyday life.”
The lesson plans are part of a wider drive by the ONS to boost data and interpretation skills and support young people, in particular, to understand and work with information. Other initiatives include “playground surveys… how-to videos and an educational webinar series”.
“By creating these educational pathways, across a range of ages, the ONS hopes to support an integrated skills system and inspire more people to engage with data in the UK,” the agency said.
I have witnessed that service fees for internet degree authorities tend to be a terrific value. For example a full College Degree in Communication from The University of Phoenix Online consists of 60 credits at $515/credit or $30,900. Also American Intercontinental University Online makes available Bachelors of Business Administration with a full school requirement of 180 units and a worth of $30,560. Online learning has made obtaining your diploma far more easy because you might earn the degree from the comfort of your abode and when you finish from office. Thanks for all your other tips I have learned through the web-site.
