The Information Commissioner’s Office recently announced a shift in its approach to working with the public sector, in which the watchdog will issue fewer and smaller penalties – but will expect organisations to raise their standards.

This includes putting in place the systems and processes needed to protect sensitive data, empowering staff to meet compliance requirements and, crucially, ensuring lessons are learned when breaches are suffered.

The regulator is committed to “working proactively” to help agencies improve their data protection, but will also issue more public reprimands to those that are currently failing to meet the required standards. Those that continue to fall short can expect further action.
