Department recruits for CTO to ‘build trust at the highest levels in the potential of technology’

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office is offering an annual salary of £120,000 as it seeks to recruit a chief technology officer.

A key objective of the chosen candidate will be “building trust at the highest levels…  in FCDO’s technology and the potential of technology, not only to enable, but to transform FCDO and HMG’s ability to deliver impactful outcomes globally”.

The CTO will also assume overall responsibility for developing and implementing the department’s tech strategy, as well as overseeing work to expand the department’s “technology architecture and assurance function”.

The postholder, who will report into chief digital and information officer Adrian Blundell, will be based across the FCDO’s two primary locations in London and East Kilbride. The technology estate under their watch stretches across 168 countries, and serves 17,000 staff in UK embassies and high commissions around the world.

During the selection process, applicants will be assessed on a range of behaviours and technical skills, including leadership, communication, and the ability to engage internationally.

Applications are open until 11.55pm on 12 October. Candidates are asked to submit a CV tailored to the role, and a suitability statement of no more than 1,250 words.

“You will have deep technical expertise with a history of delivering technology transformations, especially in modern, agile and customer-centric environments,” the job advert said. “FCDO’s technology platform is primarily Microsoft-based, and you will be able to demonstrate particular strengths and expertise in technology infrastructure as well as experience of building trust and maintaining C-suite, board-level and supplier relationships. You will be an experienced leader of technical and non-technical people, developing capability and creating an inclusive working environment which enables everyone to achieve their potential.”
