Former engineer and holder of various shadow briefs had been slated to take on a ministerial post but has now been elected to sit at the head of select committee
Long-standing Labour digital and technology expert Chi Onwurah has been elected as the new chair of parliament’s Science and Technology Committee.
Onwurah, the MP for Newcastle upon Tyne Central and West, was first elected at the 2010 general election and, since then, has held numerous shadow ministerial briefs focused on tech and digital issues. Before the general election, she was included on a 40-strong list of candidates endorsed by the Labour Digital group as those that constituted the party’s leading advocates of technology-powered transformation.
Indeed, before the public went to the polls place she was slated – in the event of a Labour victory – to take up a post in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology as minister for science, research and innovation.
Having not been given a ministerial position, Onwurah (pictured above) stood for election to lead the DSIT committee. Standing against fellow Labour MP Dawn Butler, she won by 377 votes to 183 in a vote held last week.
The Newcastle MP is a former engineer and ex-head of telecoms technology at Ofcom. Speaking at the annual PublicTechnology Cyber Security Conference in 2018, she warned attendees about the risks of connected technology.
In a post on Twitter, Onwurah said: “Thank you to all who voted and to [Dawn Butler] for such a positive campaign. I’ve spoken to MPs from all sides as part of the election and I know this [parliament] is really excited about the potential of science, innovation and technology to transform lives for the better.”
