Technology used by 34 million people around the country already offers a range of secondary care services and aims to extend its coverage to more trusts in the coming months
The health service intends to expand the NHS App to provide hospital-related services to more than 100 trusts by the end of the current financial year.
The app currently offers core secondary care services to patients across 88 trusts; this includes the ability to see referrals and appointments and send related messages, as well as access to all supporting information.
There are also 51 trusts that currently offer one or more of a range of additional features. This covers tools allowing users to book, change or cancel hospital appointments, receive notifications and messages, complete questionnaires, access other documents, and submit preferences regarding paperless communication.
The 88 trusts currently offering at least some services via the app collectively provide care to 89% of the population of England, according to the government.

The aim is get closer to 100% coverage by rolling out the software to at least 12 further trusts over the next eight months.
Supporting the NHS in delivering the app since the beginning of 2022 has been the Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE) – a unit based in the Home Office’s Homeland Security Group, whose remit is “tackling public safety and security challenges arising from evolving digital and data technology”, according to its GOV.UK webpage.
“ACE was key to surfacing data from multiple hospital patient admission systems and Patient engagement portals, developing a sophisticated system of APIs to gather and aggregate this data and accelerating delivery speed by working as an integrated part of the NHS team. This provided patients with the ability to view their hospital referrals and appointments in one place,” the Home Office unit said in a press release. “A second phase saw further features added to the app, including being able to receive notifications and messages, complete pre-consultation questionnaires and access documents relating to appointments. This benefits trusts, reducing costs by sending out fewer SMS messages and paper documents to patients. In the latest phase of the app’s development, ACE has been instrumental in helping to continue developing new features while ensuring stable service is maintained.”
First launched on 31 December 2018, the NHS App has grown its user base to a total of 34 million people.
There are 229 NHS trusts across England, including 154 foundation trusts, 50 mental health trusts, and 10 ambulance trusts.
