The Ministry of Defence is seeking to invest in a “cyberthreat-hunting hardware kit” that is portable enough to be carried onto commercial flights and can then be deployed on the ground and operate without internet connectivity.
The Joint Warfare Innovation Hub (jHub) that sits within UK Strategic Command has alerted the market to its desire to procure a physical device equipped “with typical commercial off the shelf capabilities”.

The procurement document outlines the MoD’s specifications for the system it is ultimately seek to deploy, including that “the hardware kit should be transportable [worldwide] by no more than eight personnel”. “The hardware must be capable of standalone operation in environments devoid of internet connectivity,” the notice says. “The hardware kit must also be capable of performing all hunt operation activities without requiring additional processing or storage resources from a partner nation’s on-site infrastructure or cloud. Furthermore, the hardware kit must be transportable as carry-on luggage on international commercial airlines in accordance with International Air Transport Association standards, and be compatible with the limited wattage and poorly conditioned power available in developing nations.”
The MoD has not yet launched a competitive buying process, but is currently seeking to engage with suppliers to help inform a planned procurement exercise in the future. Providers interested in taking part in this engagement have until 16 August to get in touch with the ministry.
The jHub unit leading the investment in threat-hunting tech describes its mission as “connecting world-class technology and talent with users across defence”.
