HMRC urges citizens to download app as tax credits deadline nears

Department reveals that close to 30,000 people have already renewed using the mobile application as cut off point nears for those yet to make the annual update to their claim

HM Revenue and Customs has urged citizens to download the department’s mobile app after revealing that tens of thousands of citizens have submitted their annual tax credits renewal using the software. Existing claimants have all recently received renewal packs in the post and the tax agency is encouraging recipients that the easiest way to complete the yearly claim update is using the HMRC app.

A total of 27,844 have already done so, the department said. The deadline for renewals is set for 31 July and any updates completed after this point could result in the suspension of cessation of payments.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s director general for customer services, said: “The deadline for renewing tax credits claims is fast approaching and using the HMRC app is a quick and easy way to do it. It offers customers peace of mind that their payments will be correct and they’ll continue to receive them.”

In addition to tax credits, the HMRC app – which the department claims is used by more than 700,000 people – can be used to access and manage child benefit claims, as well as income tax and National Insurance details. The platform also allows users to see all their messages from the department, obtain help with managing their finances, and receive reminders about self-assessment obligations.

Tax credits will be subsumed and replaced by Universal Credit – a process which is due to complete by the end of next year. After which, administration of the benefit for working individuals and families will be taken over by the Department for Work and Pensions across England, Scotland and Wales, and the Department for Communities in Northern Ireland.
