Private oncology clinic selects open source BI

The London Oncology Clinic, based in Harley Street, London, has confirmed its deployment of the open source Business Intelligence platform from Pentaho.

The clinic, which generates significant amounts of complex data throughout the patient treatment cycle (including diagnoses, demographic profiling, blood test results, and chemotherapy regimens), also has to analyse various business metrics which when coupled with the medical data is described by the clinic as ‘daunting’.

“To start with we were just looking for the basic monthly information needed to manage any modern business,” explained Steve Rumbles, who transitioned from his previous career in nursing, to using this expert knowledge to head up the IT function at the clinic.

“Our data was well structured for operational use but not for business analysis. Prior to Pentaho, analysis was very difficult to do and extremely time-consuming, involving in-house Java programming. ”

According to Rumbles, the BI system has now enabled the clinic to unlock a ‘wealth of insight’, and there are already plans to take the implementation one step further, including pulling together patient assessment data from the clinic’s oncology application to create monthly reports on disease staging and treatment plan formats, and creating advanced user dashboards within Pentaho to deliver clinical staff with up-to-the-minute reports.

Pentaho’s deal with London Oncology Clinic continues the company’s expansion into the UK healthcare market, and follows on with previous contracts with NHS Islington, which it signed nearly two years ago.
