Microsoft loses NHS-wide software hold

The Department of Health has announced it is ending the existing £500 million deal between Microsoft and the English health service whereby the supplier was in-line to upgrade nearly a million NHS PCs with the latest version of its software.

The change affects some 900,000 licences for Microsoft's PC software which were due for renewal this year.

The decision is being seen as token of a move away from one supplier being so dominant and trusts being able to make their own software supply decisions.
