Two of the largest suppliers of ICT and ICT services to the UK Government, Atos Origin and Siemens IT Solutions and Services, have announced they are to merge in a deal worth around €850 million.

Both companies had in recent months signed Francis Maude’s Memorandum of Understanding, which aims to deliver huge savings to the UK Government in terms of ICT spend in the coming years.

As a result of the deal, Atos Origin will become the largest Managed Services supplier in Europe, and the seventh largest in the world, with 25% of turnover coming from the public sector and healthcare. Siemens will also hold a 15% share in Atos Origin in the process.

In the UK, Siemens IT Solutions and Services has contracts with a number of public sector organisations including National Savings and Investments, Vehicle & Operator Services Agency, the UK Border Agency, the Office for National Statistics and the Welsh Assembly Government.

News of the acquisition comes just a day after the UK division of Siemens IT Solutions and Services unveiled a new head of government affairs.

“Today marks the start of a very solid and promising long term industrial alliance between Atos Origin and Siemens that will create a most attractive powerhouse in IT and hi-tech transactional services in Europe,” said Thierry Breton, chairman of the Board and CEO of Atos Origin.

“We are opening a wide field of new business and development opportunities to shape the future of IT for both our customers and employees. I am confident that the value generated by this partnership will be rewarding for all our shareholders, including Siemens.”

Peter Löscher, President and CEO of Siemens added, “We are creating a European Champion. The two organisations benefit from outstanding complementarities regarding customer base, geographies and services. As a future sustainable shareholder and strategic partner of the new company we demonstrate our confidence in the value add created by this transaction for the Siemens IT Solutions and Services employees, our shareholders and customers.”
