Northern Devon empowering nurses via mobile

Northern Devon Healthcare Trust is rolling out a mobile working project that will allow around 800 nurses and therapists to access and update patient systems while they are on visits in the community.

The Trust will use universal integration technology and a mobile working software platform, awiMX, both from supplier NDL, to launch the Department of Health Community Information Data Set (CIDS), a Department of Health directive for all community health providers, from April this year.

The awiMX toolkit allows non-technical users to build and distribute bespoke apps to smartphones or tablets using Android, BlackBerry or Windows operating systems. The Trust will use the software in conjunction with their bespoke in-house patient information system for community health workers.

This system will allow nurses and therapists to access and update information hosted on a back office system via devices such as smartphones or tablets, while they are visiting patients in the community.

Keri Storey, assistant director of health and social care at Northern Devon Healthcare Trust, said it was the first step to creating a mobile community workforce. “It will pave the way for us to be able to implement an electronic patient record across community and hospitals settings.

"Not only will it help improve patient experience, allowing nurses to spend more time with each patient, but it will also offer benefits to staff.”
