DfT commits to £750m spend on shared services

The Department for Transport (DfT) is to spend up to £750m on shared services over the next ten years, looking for a private sector partner to manage a proposed outsourcing centre it wants to set up.

DfT's outlined the project in an OEJ tender notice for a centre to cover the central Department for Transport, along with four agencies, Driving Standards, Driver and Vehicle Licensing, Vehicle Certification and Highways.

It's the second time DfT's tried to go down this path; in 2005 it had a go that ended in ignominious failure.

But commentators say this one looks much more serious, with its scope suggesting it may end up serving more than just Transport and its main executive agencies.
