Trustmarque has helped Kirklees Council increase productivity and mobility for its 6500 employees with a new Unified Communications platform
York, UK: 9th November 2010. Value Added Reseller (VAR) Trustmarque Solutions announced today that within just four months it has helped Kirklees Council to increase the productivity and mobility of its 6500 employees. This has been achieved by implementing a new Unified Communications platform while simultaneously consolidating the Councils software licensing to a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement (EA), significantly increasing efficiencies and reducing costs for the organisation.
In early 2010 Kirklees Council took the bold step to address three strategic needs in one go: improved email capability, increased mobility and collaboration, and more effective software procurement. While the original business driver for the project was around the limitations of the existing email system, the council was also implementing an office consolidation programme. Kirklees therefore decided to implement Office Communications Server (OCS) at the same time to provide a collaboration and mobility platform for its workforce which would significantly open up the possibility for staff to work more flexibly. Kirklees also moved to a Microsoft EA to enable the consolidation of individual licensing contracts, reducing the effort on individual procurements.
The project was successfully implemented in 4 months, on time and to budget, with no disruption to frontline services. Jonathan Wilkinson, Assistant Head of Service for the IT department, InTech at Kirklees Council comments:
“This project allowed us to make a significant leap forward in terms of software and mobile communications. Rather than taking a cautious approach and implementing in a piecemeal fashion, we could see the benefits of implementing these systems together. The aggregated purchase of the
EA also meant we could consolidate individual licences and make an investment in the desktop all in one go.
“Trustmarque provided expert product knowledge and project management capability, successfully helped negotiate the EA, and implement the software to plan and to budget within very short timescales ensuring the early realisation of benefits.”
Staff now enjoy improved communication and collaboration. Presence allows employees to see the status of colleagues which increases productivity by reducing email and phone tag. Instant messaging provides instant communication and new Sharepoint services will allow employees to work on the same documents at the same time, reducing storage needs. Increased mobility allows staff to work effectively from remote locations or on the move, and greater synergy with other public sector organisations using the same technologies ultimately provides better public services.
Unified Communications is one of Trustmarque’s six core IT solutions and in a tough economic climate can be an effective way of transforming the efficiency of an organisation’s business. Trustmarque helps businesses implement Microsoft® software-powered Unified Communications to help cut costs and better position organisations for the economic rebound. Unified Communications can transform the way organisations communicate and collaborate while maximizing existing communications infrastructures.
David Marriott-Lodge, Services and Solutions Director at Trustmarque, comments, “This project was successfully delivered to very tight timescales and it is fantastic to see an example of how public sector organisations can make substantial cost reductions by investing in their IT estate. Obviously public sector organisations are under pressure to cut costs and in the last six months through our Work Smart Cost Saving Campaign we have actively been working with a number of local councils to help them achieve not only significant cost savings but also work more efficiently. The Kirklees Council project has been nominated for an e-Government Excellence Award in the category of ‘Innovation in Strategy at a Local Level’.”
Earlier this year, Trustmarque gained a place on the government IT framework for Commoditised IT Hardware and Software (CITHS), previously known as Catalist. Trustmarque is one of just ten companies to be awarded a framework agreement for a position on the prestigious software supplier list with preferred adviser and provider status to both central (civil) government and the wider public sector.
The Trustmarque Work Smart Cost Savings Campaign was launched on 1st September 2010 and is geared towards helping public sector organisations drive out costs. For more information visit www.trustmarque.com/worksmart.
