A new survey of more than 250 network and security managers in UK companies reveals strong consensus amongst IT managers that Facebook and similar Web 2.0 social networking applications should be banned from the corporate environment.
The survey was commissioned by Blue Coat Systems, the leader in WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, and was conducted by independent research company, Rapid Research.
The participants included 147 security managers and 109 network managers, and 74% of security managers and 71% of network managers recommended that Web 2.0 social networking applications like Facebook be banned from the workplace.
The survey was designed to compare and contrast attitudes between security and network managers on a variety of issues.
According to Nigel Hawthorn, VP EMEA Marketing at Blue Coat; “I’m surprised at the depth of feeling expressed. However, as with many new technologies, including the Internet itself in its early years, organisations are still evaluating the potential of Web 2.0 social networking applications and learning how to harness their power in a controlled manner. “
He continued, “We are seeing certain enlightened organisations like BT who – with our ProxySG appliances in place – are able to allow controlled access to applications such as Facebook and MySpace within the context of a broader HR acceptable usage policy whilst still protecting their IT resources against malware, such as spyware, viruses and other security threats.”
