General Optical Council puts training online for its 16,000 members

The GOC's CET website, www.cetoptics.com is the platform for its statutory CET scheme - the first such scheme to be introduced in any healthcare sector - which came into effect on 1st July 2005, and will replace previous schemes. The site is managed by Vantage on behalf of the GOC, the CET User and the CET Providers.

GOC registrants -- dispensing opticians and optometrists -- register securely on cetoptics.com to view online the coming year's calendar of CET events and plan how to get their CET points to fulfil their training requirement. Members also use the website to securely record and track their CET using a browser and PC.

CET Providers are registered with the GOC and Vantage via the site, and submit their CET proposals for the coming year. Providers are reviewed by the GOC's approver panel to ensure they meet the Scheme's needs. On successful completion of a CET activity, the Provider updates the member's record via the CET website. Members can then accept or reject the update and have the points entered on their records - keeping control over the final CET record.

According to Peter Coe, Chief Executive of the GOC: "With the transition of CET from a voluntary to a statutory requirement, we needed to migrate paper-based CET processes to an online platform that would reduce overheads on data inputting, processing and management, and give members better visibility of their progress.

"Vantage won the tender to deliver an online CET management system and it has been successfully piloted in the run-up to CET becoming compulsory, with SOME excellent feedback from members. Registrants get a comprehensive overview of the CET options available to them, and are better able to assess their progress during the year. With Vantage hosting the system, we get the service levels we require without the headaches of system management."
