Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has awarded a contract with CIS Healthcare to deliver and integrate ePrescription management into its existing IT systems.
The platform, Theriak will incorporate the Multilex Drug Data File from First DataBank Europe through its Drug Advice eXpert (DAX), which provides a unique graphical interface for clinical decision support, enabling users to quickly and easily check for drug allergies, drug-drug interactions and duplicate medicines.
Theriak will be interfaced with existing Trust systems to offer a seamless solution for medicines management; this includes ChemoCare from CIS, which means the Trust will have an integrated solution for both general and complex chemotherapy prescribing.
'The Trust's ambition is to be at the forefront of developments in technology and this is an extremely important partnership opportunity which will be of significant benefit to both parties,' commented Brian Steven, director for business development and performance Management at LTHT. 'The system has the potential to deliver real advances in both patient safety and cost reduction thanks to shorter patient stays and more efficient use of costly drugs.'
Professor Liz Kay, LTHT clinical director of medicines management & pharmacy services, explained the track record of the Trust in innovation, and recognised, 'the weaknesses of the current paper-based prescribing system with its risks of human error. Implementing a technology-based solution is a challenge but we believe the Theriak system offers functionality not previously available before. We are looking forward to seeing it in action and, with staff on our wards, helping to improve patient care.'
Dr Steve Dean, deputy medical director, medicines management and pharmacy services, agreed: "This is a fantastic opportunity to make medicines safer and to improve the care we provide for patients in Leeds. We are looking forward to working with Theriak to bring these benefits to our patients.'
Theriak is currently implemented in approximately fifty hospitals across Europe, in The Netherlands, Iceland, Norway, Denmark and Austria. CIS Healthcare is also the supplier of ChemoCare, the leading ePrescribing solution for chemotherapy in the UK.
Tony Pegg, Chief Executive of CIS Healthcare said: 'We are delighted to be working with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The opportunity to work together is yet another major milestone in the introduction of Theriak into the UK. We will be combining our highly successful track record of chemotherapy prescribing implementations in the UK with an advanced ePrescribing product of equal track record across Europe. The UK is a further cornerstone to our continued growth as a specialist ePrescribing systems provider.'
"Several weeks into the new era of Coaltiion Government and certain key themes are emerging. First up, it's clear that the battle of the 'who can get their memoirs out the door quick enough to steal a march in the revisionist history stakes' has been triumphantly won by M'Lord Mandelson (Weren't those TV ads scary – the velvet smoking jacket, the leather fireside chair, all that Brillcream! The only thing missing was the theme tune to Tales of the Unexpected and the accompanying prancing sillouette of Harriet Harman or Diane Abbott dancing!)” Read more
Colin Rickard, managing director EMEA at SAS subsidiary Dataflux, argues public sector data must be of high quality if the efficiencies promised with ICT and infrastructure is to be realised.
"Tackling the public sector’s data integration and data quality challenges is a tough prospect. The challenge may require more effort than a comparative project in a large private company. Data must be governed according to a strategy that necessitates bringing interested parties together.” Read more
