'Fast Internet access is essential to the way we live our lives today.' said David Clarke, Chief Executive of the Institute. 'This kind of groundbreaking project from Swindon Borough Council is something that all local councils should look to. Dramatically increasing the options and availability for broadband access is an important step towards overcoming the digital divide.
'Increasingly we're seeing local and national government providing services online. This has so much potential for benefit, but everyone needs to be able to access it. Local councils have a big stake in this - for access to their own online services, for making an area attractive to business, and for improving quality of life for residents. It's great to see that Swindon Borough Council is acting on it.'
The Institute, which represents over 70,000 IT professional members, has a Royal Charter to promote the use of IT to the general public.
David concluded: 'Our mission is to ‘Enable the Information Society'. We're looking to encourage safe participation online, to educate and promote the benefits of using this technology and empowering people to manage, create and use information which, like technology, is at the heart of today's world. It's fantastic to see public bodies sharing this vision.'
