More flexible working in IT industry, according to W-Tech poll

W-Tech 2009, organised by the BCS Women's Forum and recruitment portal womenintechnology.co.uk, will take place on 24 June.

Microsoft is the headline sponsor, while Google and Hewlett Packard, among others, will support the free event. Aimed at women who want to get into, or on in IT, the inspirational recruitment showcase comprises soft skills career workshops and the opportunity to connect with key employers. There will also be an evening panel discussion and networking event featuring high-profile female entrepreneurs.

Dr Jan Peters, manager of the BCS Women's Forum, says: "IT professionals who have responsibility for younger or older dependents have a need to work flexibly, and clearly employers are taking notice. There will always be demand from employers for IT professionals with the right mix of soft and technical skills - a number of which will be discussed and debated at W-Tech."

Over 1,000 people have signed up for the event at the IET building, Savoy Place, London. It comes as recent research by BCS suggests IT is beginning to be seen as a 'career of choice' alongside traditional middle-class professions.

Places are still available, but delegates are urged to register to secure their preferred workshop streams via www.wtech-event.co.uk. Regular Twitter updates about the event are also available from the site.

¹The poll was conducted on W-Tech between 16 January and 22 April. Respondents were asked whether they thought there was more flexible working in the IT industry than five years ago. A total of 173 responses were received, with 72% saying they thought there was more flexible working, while 28% said they did not think so.
