LocalGov Digital launches designers network

LocalGov Digital, the local government ICT practitioner network, has launched a sub-network for digital designers and developers working on council services.

The LocalGov Digital Makers group is aimed at spreading best practice and encouraging collaboration between those creating digital services for local government.

It will also work with partners including innovation charity Nesta and developer network Rewired State to help break down barriers between councils and other organisations.

Jason Williams, LocalGov Digital steering group member and corporate web manager at Cornwall Council said, “LocalGov Digital Makers will exploit existing resources such as GitHub, Google+ and Europe Commons to help join up the good work being done in Local Government.”

Phil Rumens, LocalGov Digital vice chair and lead for Makers said the group was keen to hear from practitioners in local government who can offer their skills to collaborate around code or standards issues.

He also called for them to submit projects they would like to share more widely through the Local Gov Digital network.

Makers will run a hack day as a fringe event of LocalGovCamp, on 20 June 2014 in central Birmingham.

To get involved with Makers, join the LocalGov Digital Community on Google+find it on GitHub or register your organisation with Europe Commons. LocalGov Digital Makers is also Tweeting at @LGMakers.

Last month, LocalGov Digital launched a new tool to crowdsource feedback on council websites.

The new website, www.council.usability-test.org.uk, is currently in beta mode, with users able to rate the provision of services across more than 100 councils in England, Scotland and Wales
