68 finalists in the e-Government National Awards 2008 (http://www.e-governmentawards.co.uk) have been announced - highlighting the UK's most effective services which improve citizen and business transaction with councils, central government departments and other public sector organisations. The winners will be presented with their awards on 20th January 2009 at a dinner in the City of London by Minister Tom Watson MP and Government CIO John Suffolk.
| Finalists include a great diversity of excellence in e-Government and public sector services from across the UK - Councils, central government, voluntary organisations, universities and others are all represented in this year's 'best of the best'. Key themes in this year's finalists list are services which help build a fairer society, and are based on sustainable or carbon-neutral 'Green IT'. There is no higher commendation for the UK's best public sector ICT leaders. | |
Tom Watson MP, Cabinet Office Minister with responsibility for Transformational Government says:
"Public services continue to be transformed by technology, improving delivery on the front line and making us more efficient behind the scenes. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the winners in January."
This year's finalists have been chosen from among the record 588 nominations that were submitted by senior public sector professionals. The annual e-Government National Awards are the UK's highest level commendation for the best e-Government services - services which, through innovative online delivery or IT implementation, positively transform the lives of citizens, local communities, business and stakeholders.
John Suffolk, the Government's Chief Information Officer, says:
“I have been very pleased to see so many high quality entries for this year’s e-Government National Awards, which highlight the many ways technology is being used to transform our public services. I congratulate the 68 finalists and look forward to meeting the winners in January”.

Keith Bannister, Head of IT Advisory, KPMG, says: "KPMG is proud to be lead sponsor of the awards for the fourth year running, for us this is a way of recognising and celebrating all the good work that’s been done.
"We believe that e-government has helped to transform public services in this country, it has made them more open, more accessible and more efficient. A key theme of this year's Awards are Government services which help build a fairer, more inclusive society. E-Government gives all citizens and businesses the opportunity to interact directly with services and government which is why we think e-Government is helping to build a fairer society."
Tony Singleton, Directgov's Chief Operating Officer says: "I am delighted that Directgov is playing a part in recognising achievements in transformational government by sponsoring the e-Government National Awards. The Awards are an excellent way of highlighting those organisations and teams that are making life easier for members of the public in accessing government services. The standard of this year’s entries was very high and show what a high level of commitment there is to making people’s lives easier when dealing with government."
